Kapital 8: die Liebenden || Chapter 8: The Lovers

The Wolfsangel (Wolf-hook) was a form of wolf trap used in Germany and other countries in Central Europe where one end would be affixed to a tree branch and the other embedded in a piece of meat, like a fishhook in bait. The wolf would eat the meat and impale itself on the hook, where it would be trapped until caught or killed by whoever set the trap. The z-shaped hook was used as a symbol of peasant rebellion in the 15th century and the 30 Years War, but was later revived in the 1910s after being included in the popular book Der Wehrwolf (a pun, both on “Werewolf” and Wehr meaning “weapon” or “army”) and then adopted by the Nazis. Today it is recognized as a hate symbol used by neo-Nazi groups.
