CHARACTERS

HANS VOGEL

GERMANY

ULI BRECHER

Hans’s wingman and childhood best friend, Ulrich “Uli” Brecher is the son of a successful engineer working for Messerschmitt and a lesser Bavarian noblewoman. He’s charming, well-off, and mischievous to a fault: but he doesn’t seem to realize that his money and breeding let him get away with things that others wouldn’t. He hates the Nazis and is quite vociferous about it, but the main reason nobody’s done anything about him is because they suspect Uli just hates anything that’s too popular for his tastes.

FRITZ HANAU

Hans’s other wingman and other childhood best friend, Fritz Hanau is the son of a Japanese immigrant lawyer and the cabaret dancer he fell in love with: a romantic story that makes him groan every time he hears it. He is cripplingly insecure about his biracial heritage, and to compensate, has dedicated himself to becoming the ultimate Party member. He spends every waking moment trying to maximize his contribution to the war effort, trying to escape the realization that no one except his friends will ever respect him or his work because of who his parents were.

FRAU FROHWEIN

Ingrid Frohwein is an Austrian-Jewish emigre who settled in Berlin before the Great War with her children to pursue her life’s dream: baking. She owns a Cafe and Konditerei (candy shop) near Hans’s childhood home, and her granddaughter goes to school with Hans, Fritz, and Uli. She meets a young Hans after he is kicked out of his house for wasting his bread and takes him under her wing, eventually employing him at her shop.

HEINRICH VOGEL

Heinrich Vogel is a man who has drunk his fill of war and still can’t get enough. He joined the Kaiser’s army in 1914 to escape poverty and quickly acclimated, becoming close friends with his immediate squadron and growing accustomed even to the battlefields of the Eastern Front. An injury in 1917 meant he was unable to return to the front, and as a result, he became the only survivor of his squadron: something that has haunted him for the rest of his life. After failing to re-enlist, he joined up with the Freikorps paramilitary groups and fought in the 1918-1919 Revolution, and in the newly-independent Baltic States in 1920. He is cruel, unwavering in his beliefs, and determined to make his son Hans the soldier that his injury prevented him from being.
